Coppicing is a traditional and sustainable woodland management technique that involves cutting trees down to a stump, or "stool," to encourage new shoots to grow. This method dates back to the Stone Age and allows for the continuous harvesting of wood from living trees, as many hardwood species will regenerate after being cut. Coppiced trees can be recognized by their multiple thin trunks or "poles" at the base, which develop from dormant buds. This practice not only supports biodiversity but also helps maintain healthy woodlands.
